obama and house speaker john boehner hit a wall. it the deal extend the bush tax cuts for families making less than $250,000 a year. there are no spending cuts in this deal. the democrats said they already agreed to cuts in last year's debt ceiling hike. but republicans will go ballistic over no spending cuts. there is one year of extended unemployment benefits in this deal. that was a red line for some democrats who say it's good for the country and fair for the many people who still can't find work. it doesn't raise enough revenue or cut spending enough to stop the sequestration. in the words of the critics they will have to kick the can down the road. this will be a hard sell for republicans who say the country has a spending problem, not a revenue problem. president obama is hoping the midnight deadline puts pressure on them. >> date appears that an agreement to prevent this new year's tax hike is within sight. but it's not done. there are still issues left to resolve. but we are hopeful that congress can get it done. but it's n

john boehner from the very beginning put 800 billion in revenue on the table. the president was known to say, well, that's mine. i get that one for free. i don't have to give anything in return. the president in addressing a deficit added $1.6 trillion in new spending. gregg: yeah. >> so who are we joking right now? the president has never taken the spending side of this equation seriously, which is why we don't have a deal. republicans have put their necks on the line supporting new revenues, the president's not coming through. gregg: senator barrasso said the president does want to go over the cliff, because he wants to punish republicans. is there something to that? >> i don't think there's anything to that, but the reality is that if he wants to get anything done, he has two options. he either breaks the republicans on taxes, or he breaks the republicans. i read that somewhere, and i thought it was a fantastic quote. but i do think that he is going -- i don't think any of us want to see the country go off the cliff. gregg: maybe he just didn't think $16 tri

you have to remember that john boehner actually gave in on the principle of raising tax rates for the highest earners. he wanted to set it at one million dollars. president wanted 250 or maybe 400,000. but boehner gave in on that principle and i talked to republicans. it sounds to me like 80 to 85% of the republicans in the house were willing to vote with boehner on that issue. they were willing to go for raising tax rates on the highest earners. there was at least 200 republican votes. so that is something to work with. and it is entirely possible there could be a deal along those lines that includes democratic votes to get boehner over the top in the house. gregg: i was going to say, if harry reid passes it in the senate, then it goes to the house you about, the republicans who voted down plan b or didn't even get a chance to vote down plan b but they would havep a parently, they're going to wish they had voted in favor of plan b, won't they? >> well it could be because plan. about was at least a million dollars. but all the attention has been paid to those republican who is stopped
